Liverpool Sound City 2023

Student Music Network Preview: by Molly Smith

Festival season is kicking off this April as the city of Liverpool will once again host Sound City, a three-day festival, showcasing a variety of established and emerging talent.

This year’s headliners include indie Northern heroes, The Reytons and Student Music Network class of alumni Maisie Peters, fresh from her UK headline tour.

With its rich musical heritage and established live music scene, Liverpool is the perfect setting to discover new music and revel in the recognisable tracks that have already found themselves onto your summer playlists. This year’s line-up checks a number of the genre boxes exhibiting talent from the world of indie, rock and pop music.

Some key players in this year’s line-up include Olivia Dean, Dylan John Thomas and James Marriott but the festival will also shine a light on up-and-coming artists who are just starting to make waves in the UK music scene.

The first day of Liverpool Sound city has been coined New Music Friday and will exhibit fresh sounds from Beren Olivia, As December Falls and c3six as well as many more. Michael Aldag who rose to fame on TikTok and has since received praise from Dork, ITV and Clash will be one of many to join this conference day. Swim Deep will also be playing a set, and having played at Glastonbury and securing the support clot on The 1975’s US tour, is definitely not one to be missed.

Joining The Reytons on the Saturday 29 is the female trio, Peaness, who have been drumming up excitement locally, packing out venues and were recently invited to play live on Radio X. Saturday also bares witness to The K’s, Florence Noon, The Clause, Deco, The Royston Club, Reignmaker, Courting, The Skinner Brothers, Alex Spencer, Rianne Downey, Bertie, Barerra, Little Planets and Robin Ashcroft.

Maise Peters is scheduled to hit the main stage on Sunday 30 but not until a jam-packed day of acts proceeds. As well as those mentioned earlier, the final day of the festival will see All Day, Vespar, Picture Parlour, King Liar, Afrein, Lei Hope, Skinny Living, Finn Foxell, The Goa Express, Overpass, Opus Kink and The Covasettes. Tom A Smith is also on the line up and has recently sold out hometown shows and is a new solo act that is definitely worth watching if you are here for your indie rock fix.

Sound City has a star-studded list of alumni including Lizzo, Stormzy, Florence and the Machine, The 1975, Christine and the Queens and Years and Years which tells of the calibre of acts you can expect from this festival, before the arena tours commence!
